A comprehensive routine eye exam not only determines the prescription that is needed for new glasses or contact lenses, but it also includes the thorough exam of the eyes and binocular system. During the eye exam you can expect the doctor to check your vision and perform a basic evaluation of your binocularity, your eye muscle function and you're gross peripheral vision. A refraction is done by the eye doctor to determine your glasses prescription that will be tailored to your individual lifestyle needs. If contact lenses are worn, you and the doctor will work together to determine the contact lens parameters and options that will be best for you, as well as evaluate the fit and comfort of the lenses on your eyes to make sure it is also the healthiest contact lens choice for you.
Checking the health of the eye itself is an important part of the comprehensive routine eye exam that typically includes a non-contact tonometer to determine your eye pressures, a slit lamp exam of the front surface of the eye, and a dilated fundus exam to evaluate the health of the inside of the eye where the lens, optic nerve head, macula, and retina are. In addition to the dilated fundus exam, you can have a retinal Optomap image taken to document the Baseline Health eyes. These images also help the doctor show what they are seeing when they look inside your eyes, as well as explain any health concerns that may be applicable to you. Each person is evaluated for eye disease such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and many other ocular disorders. At the conclusion of the comprehensive routine eye exam the doctor may ask you to return to the office for follow-up visits to check your vision with the glasses or contact lenses, or to return in order to perform additional testing in regards to the health of your eyes. It is important to have comprehensive routine eye exams to make sure that you are seeing as well as possible with your glasses or contacts, but also to evaluate the health of the eye itself for any eye conditions or diseases that can compromise your vision or health overtime.
